18 Oct

Do you have any idea how hard it is to go to sleep the night before your first half marathon?!? Well, it very hard. I packed all my stuff in a gym bag so in the morning it would be easy to find. I tend to be a scatterbrain on a normal morning…I set the alarm for 5am!!! The coffee was set to go but since I don’t have a fancy coffee maker I had to go push the start button and then I crawled back in bed.

Don’t judge!! It was warm in there. As soon as I heard the coffee finish I got back out of bed, poured a cup of coffee then got on twitter! After I was caffeinated sufficiently, I got ready and my final preparation was this:

Up closest to my watch is the list of ladies running in various races across the great USA.

In the heart are the initials of all my peeps!! People who have supported, encouraged, loved, listened and just generally been there for me in my journey.

1 Milers = @mrsfatass, @lissajoy, @amerrylife ~ we all ran our 1st mile in forever together last year at Fitbloggin.

OC Walkers = several of my girlfriends were in OC walking for a Cure. I usually join them but the date conflicted with my half.

I finally finished getting ready and I got my butt to Atlantic City. AC was crazy busy because of all the marathoners so I waited in traffic before I could park. My first stop after parking was the ladies room which had the longest line in history!! While I waited in line, Marisa found me!

*There may or may not have been jumping up and down and squealing….I’ll never tell!! 😉

Marisa was in AC with her husband celebrating their 15th anniversary!! HUGE WOOT for that accomplishment!! And how cute is it that they were running a 10K to celebrate?!?

Then we headed outside to the starting line. I have seen the boardwalk packed before but nothing like this:

Everyone running the 10K, Half and Full Marathons were lined up together and started off on the same course. Marisa and her husband ran with me for the first 3 miles and then we were separated.  It was so amazing to run with such a great friend to start my very first half marathon.  Marisa has a great recap on her blog, go check it out – there was a juggler and she got a picture!

I had to continue down the street toward the marina district. Running through the streets of AC was a very interesting experience – a whole new perspective of a town I have lived near my whole life.  The course took me through marina casino district, up on the expressway bridge onto the actual expressway and through a huge intersection before heading back to the boardwalk. I think I was back on the boardwalk around mile 8 – where I had to run back through the start/finish line area and keep going…in the other direction.

Keep going I did. Around mile 10ish I saw my family! My husband and my daughter and my mom and her boyfriend.

I ran over and hugged Big Man super tight, he told me he was proud of me and I kept going. My daughter ran along side of me for a few blocks then I sent her back to Big Man and I continued on the boardwalk. I only had about a mile before the final turnaround. At that point they told me there was 2 miles left. I was so happy that I would see my family again before the finish line.  Around this point I needed to walk more than I would have liked but I needed the break. My legs thanked me for it and when I saw my family again and my daughter ran again with me for a few blocks.

I love my family and needed them at the point! My daughter gave me the little boost I needed to keep going!

I walked some more but all of the sudden I saw the lights of the finish line and I had an extra boost or something.

Marisa waited for me at the finish line and she snapped this awesome picture:

I was so overwhelmed with emotion. I wanted to cry in the worst way but there were no tears. I guess I had sweat out all the liquid so I could not form any tears. I felt the sobs welling up in me as I crossed the finish line.

Marisa hugged me and took one final picture.

Here is me with my bling:

Thanks Marisa, for running with me and taking all the awesome pictures of such an awesome day!!!

Thanks to all my friends who have supported me in so many, many ways!

Special CONGRATS to all my fellow half marathoners from yesterday: Bari (her first half), Kirsten, Reneee, Lauren, and Lori. (I will link their names to their race reports when I read them)

You and Marisa look so cute in that photo. And my favorite is of you and your daughter. The smile on her face says it all. I am so proud of what you have accomplished. You inspire people to get off the couch and take their own risks. It doesn’t have to be running but it has to be something and you are proof it can be done and fun can be had while doing it. What an awesome day for you and your family.
