I popped my treadmill-running cherry

12 Jun

Friday night I checked into the Harrah’s Casino/Hotel with my daughter and her friend for a blogger event.  This post is NOT going to be about said blog event…instead, I am going to write about a profound experience I had with a treadmill Saturday morning.

But of course, I must tell you the whole story first.

I am in Week 3 of  half marathon training.  After a long winter of depression and stress and excuses, I am finally feeling like my better than my old self! I am following a plan and kicking training ass. Today is Day 21 of training and I have only skipped one workout and that was 16 days ago.  I am running 4 times a week and I am loving every minute of it…of course, that is not to say that every single run or workout are perfect because sometimes they just suck…but I am loving it none-the-less. I feel strong and confident and happy. I feel good about myself and that leads to feeling more confident and more happy.

Interesting cycle I am learning.

I feel better when I am pushing myself.

I feel better when I am getting all sweaty!

Speaking of pushing myself and getting all sweaty….I was supposed to be telling you a story about a treadmill.

My training plan calls for a Saturday “long” run. This Saturday, Day 20 of training, a 4 mile run was on the schedule. I tweeted back and forth with my good friend Colleen about what to do. I don’t want to skip workouts and I am trying to get myself into the routine of early m0rning workouts. I run outside. I do not usually have access to a treadmill so I have never really run on one.  The hotel I was staying at was not the best place to go run 4 miles by myself but the hotel had a nice gym. Colleen encouraged me to give the treadmill a chance – there was no better time to try it out and what did I have to lose.

My biggest fear is falling off the dang treadmill.

I am sorta completely clumsy.

Let’s just say Colleen can be pretty convincing.

I set the alarm for 5:27 (my new wake up call 6 days a week – I am trying so hard to do this early morning thing but that is another post entirely)!

Did I mention I was in a hotel with two tweens?!?

They were up until 3am at least.

I did sleep, thank you Adele on my ipod. I plugged in and went to sleep and the girls played cards and made bracelets all night. I woke up a few times so I didn’t get the best night sleep so 5:27 was a bit rough. I dragged my butt out of bed by 6 and meandered through the entire casino and hotel.  I found the gym (I am telling you, it was quite the journey) and picked a treadmill on the end so I had a decent view. It was really foggy but I did have a waterviews.

I look like I know what I am doing! HA!

I had a pretty cool treadmill! When I started my Polar my heart rate I noticed my heart rate was shown on the treadmill monitor.  ALSO, there was a TV on the monitor on the treadmill. How cool is that?!? Of course the TV got weird channels. I think there were 4 different Asian news channels, a Spanish channel and an Italian channel and a bunch of news channels and nickelodeon. I settled in with Steve Urkel and set to moving my feet.

I was still nervous about falling off so I went slow. I decided 3.0mph was fine for my walking intervals and 4.0mph for my running intervals. I am not very fast on land so I figured this was good. And it was. I had no idea how to set the treadmill to do the intervals so I just did it manually.  I walked for .15 mile and ran for .35 until I had completed 4 miles.

I laughed through Steve Urkel.

Then my beloved Penguins of Madagascar came on. I LOVE those penguins. They are funny and amusing and they really helped pass the time.

I felt like I was on that treadmill forever.

I ❤ my Polar

I was!

Over an hour.

But I kept moving!

I had Steve Urkel, the penguins, and some voices of friends rolling through my head. All helped tremendously.

In the end I hit 4 miles. It felt like it took me forever but I don’t even care. I kicked serious ass with this treadmill run.

I popped my running on a treadmill cherry!

I fought with my mind’s urge to get off that treadmill.

I fought the urge to give up….this was hard and long and hard and long!

I pushed myself!

I completed 4 miles when I could have easily put it off for another time.

I learned something about myself.

I CAN do this!

I can take care of me!

I can kick my own ass!

I have IT in me!

oh, and one more thing…

I sweat like a man on the treadmill! Myback is worse but I couldn't take a pic of my back!

Glad you had a great treadmill experience! I applaud you for fighting the urge to get off, that is one that plagues quite a few people (myself included). So, think you’ll hop back on anytime soon?

You freaking ROCK! Way to get outside your comfort zone. I actually prefer the TM for my speed workouts because I’m no good at judging my pace at the track. On the TM, I know exactly how fast I’m going and for how long.

    Proud of you, girlie!

Congrats on getting on the treadmill and pushing through your run! I’m not a fan of the TM either, but maybe us clumsy girls shouldn’t be so worried. We seem to be ok 🙂

You totally rock! Im a clumsy mess on the treadmill too. Maybe I should slow it own a bit. Your end of workout ic looks GREAT! Looks like you dominated that workout!

Treadmills are sooooo boring for long distances! I’d much prefer to do distance outside. It’s like your brain just knows your not going anywhere. WAY TO GO! running is MOSTLY mental and it sounds to me like your a runner!

HA! I’m soooooo glad you didn’t hurt yourself. I am UBER klutzy and am very afraid of the machines…. I sorta feel like I’m gonna look like Lucy on a treadmill. Ha!

You have such discipline and I admire that. What Jenn doesn’t tell you is the beds at the hotel were amazing. Just pulling myself out of the bed that morning was a task. 🙂

    You rock, girl.
